Our proposal originates from a different way of seeing relationships between human beings, a way that involves becoming aware of the relationships we have with others.
"THE OTHER" is a being that matters, that means something. The impersonal laws of the market become personal: the supply comes from small producers, who can be known by their first and last name; the demand comes from the consumer who wants to drink a good cup of coffee and who is interested in the origin of the product.
For small producers, coffee has produced a real miracle. As a substitute for subsistence crops such as corn and black beans, this crop can, on the one hand, constitute one of the few options for access to economic independence, prosperity and progress, and on the other hand, and under good conditions, be a crop that protects the environment.
The producer's attachment to his plantations goes far beyond the economic aspect. They are much more than simple workers in the productive sector; they are professional, specialized producers, attached to a product that is largely their "human culture".
A FAIR PRICE is above all a profitable price, which does not fluctuate according to speculation and which above all allows for the consolidation of a market in the long term. It must guarantee producers the profitability of their crops, but also the boosting of their local economy. It is essential that they do not leave for months far from their families in search of miserable income, but that they can really invest their workforce in their own development, the conservation of their place of life and production, while strengthening at the same time the social bond of proximity. All this without depending on subsidies and external national or international interventions.
Working in a cooperative is, in our opinion, the best guarantee in terms of traceability of the product and the sector. In an activity that is already difficult to make profitable, we have chosen that our approach should first and foremost involve fair and equitable remuneration. from our producers/cooperators.
In addition, many certifications no longer represent a sufficient guarantee of quality in our eyes, and the financial premiums received are far from being commensurate with the investments in money and labor made. Income must not only guarantee the profitability of crops, but also revitalize the local economy and allow families to invest in their own development without depending on national or international subsidies and external interventions.
ECOLOGICAL & ECO-RESPONSIBLE
To preserve the planet, it is necessary, among other things, to protect its forests threatened by deforestation and monoculture. The cultivation of coffee trees by the Chorti Indians is part of sustainable agroforestry solutions. To produce good coffee, it is also necessary to preserve the plant cover of large trees in order to protect the coffee trees from too much sunlight. It is also necessary to maintain soil richness by incorporating compost and practicing environmentally friendly agriculture.
